Creativity for mindfulness

Art making can be such a therapeutic activity and has been used by so many people over the years as a form of mindfulness practice. There are many forms of art making, and in this article we’re going to look at the advantages of urban sketching as a form of mindfulness. I’ll be linking back to the official Urban Sketching website while also sharing some personal antidotes along the way.
So, what is Urban Sketching?
From the Urban Sketchers homepage: “Urban Sketchers is a global community of sketchers dedicated to the practice of on-location drawing. We share our love for the places where we live and travel—one drawing at a time.”
For me, this means observing the world around me and being mindful of the shapes and colours of what I can see.
I first got into urban sketching during a time when I was experiencing mental ill health and was wanting to get out of the house. I took my sketchbook and a small tin of watercolours, got a coffee and people watched around me. Using my sketchbook I was able to remain grounded in the moment.
